Dance styles of the Kemer Dance Festival
The world of swing
At the Kemer Dance Festival you have the opportunity to learn and dance various swing styles, including the authentic Norwegian swing and bugg, as well as international jive or the Finnish ballroom jive called Fusku. Our instructors and dancers come from Norway, Finland and Sweden. The swing styles vary each year.
- Folkeswing: Norwegian original swing style and bugg
- Jive: International jive style to swinging 6-count music (East Coast Swing)
- West Coast Swing: International dance style to modern pop music
- Bugg: Swedish 4-step dance style to swinging music
- Fusku: Finnish ballroom jive style to fast foxtrot and swinging music
- Jazzfoxtrot: Old style of dancing closed-hold swing or jazz from the 1920s
The world of tango
Argentine tango and waltz, as well as milonga.
"It takes two to tango" – now you can learn the steps of Argentine tango from scratch with Norwegian, Swedish and Turkish dance enthusiasts, and learn to handle an Argentine dance evening, or milonga.
- Wanha tango: The authentic and original over-100-year-old ballroom tango style, influenced by Argentine tango. The Finnish tango waltz is also danced with Wanha Tango steps.
- Finnish tango: If you visit Finland, you cannot avoid Finnish tango. It differs in many ways from Argentine and salon tango, but its tango feel is conveyed from the first step.
- Tango Americano: The American way of dancing tango – also competed worldwide. A combination of Argentine tango and competitive dance tango.
At the Kemer Dance Festival, tango classes have different levels, so please take this into account when participating in classes.
The world of Latin dances
Latin dances are featured in our programme variously each year.
- Salsa: Developed from Son music and dance, possibly the most common dance in the world, with various styles in different countries.
- Bachata: A popular partner dance that originated in the Dominican Republic and spread worldwide.
- Rumba Bolero: The slowest Rumba rhythm, danced in many styles.
- Cha cha: A rhythmic and joyful dance developed from Rumba and Jive.
- Kizomba: Known as the African tango, a new partner dance worth exploring.
- Bossa Nova and Samba: Bossa Nova is soft, beautiful music and a slow version of samba; Samba is a social, competitive and carnival dance.
The world of waltz
Waltz is included in the programme variously each year.
- Slow waltz: The slow English waltz is a standardized dance; the American slow waltz is called the country waltz.
- Viennese waltz: A standardized fast international dance; the Finnish waltz is a simpler version of it.
